Thank you all so much for your words of encouragement and support and your good wishes re Martha's hospital 'procedure' it went well and she's recovering in hospital overnight. Martha has epilepsy, diagnosed when she was 19 and in her first year of medical school. It's the kind of epilepsy that doesn't respond well to medication, nor is is it the kind for which brain surgery is an option. Today she was given a Vagus Nerve Stimulator implant. It goes under the skin and has a wire attached to the vagus nerve in the neck. A tricky and intricate bit of surgery which took 3 hours!!
This implant won't stop her seizures but if it is successful it should reduce the frequency and the severity of the seizures. It is successful in only 65% of cases. We hope Martha is in that 65%
.
It's been a very long day with a lot of waiting around and worrying. I feel drained. I shall be going back to the hospital tomorrow to bring her back to her house in this beautiful location by the river with the wonderful view (It's actually her friend's Mum's house). More tomorrow......
Give Martha our love, Sue. We both hope the implant is successful. You must feel drained but Iām sure Martha is pleased you are there supporting her.
@foxes37 Thanks Lis. Yes, although Martha told me I neednāt come because sheād be fine I think she was really pleased that I did come. I just hope this works.
Love to you both, Martha is very brave & has proved how strong & courageous she is! I am sure she received this strength form her mum & dad.My prayers are with you all.
I'm sure we all wish Martha a speedy & successful out come of today's op Sue. Let's keep fingers crossed she is one of the lucky ones, good odds, more that half! Martha has done so well in life even with that drawback, you must be very proud of her! No commenting for you tonight, a glass of wine & an early night!
@susie1205 Thank you Susie, I do appreciate those positive thoughts. The London is an amazing place, all glass and brand new. Martha was a medical student at Barts and The London and sheās very well looked after by the neurology team.
@happysnaps Thank you Valerie, youāre very kind. I really do appreciate your thoughts and prayers. Martha has done amazingly well, weāre very proud of her.
@happypat Thank you so much Pat for your thoughts and good wishes, they are very, very much appreciated. Yes, we are very proud of Martha for what she has achieved. She really does deserve to be in that lucky 65%. ( I have drunk a fair bit of wine in the last couple of days. š·š)
I've just been catching up with all your photos Sue and have only now seen what you've been doing. I do hope your daughter is feeling so much better and that the procedure will be hugely successful.
