Name tags
In case of accidents and shaft collapses in the Cornish tin mines, it was very important that everyone knew who was working in each mine shaft. These copper name tags were a way of doing this and were attached to boards at the head of each shaft.

we had a coal mine here that blew up, killing 29 men, the most poignant image was their id tags left on the board outside :(

Mining is a hard, dangerous occupation. My father-in-law was a coal miner and died of Black Lung disease.
