Pomelo Power!

As mentioned a few weeks ago was the moon festival where the big tradition is having bbqs with friends and family. Another tradition of this holiday is giving people pomelos.

If you've never had one, it's a bit like a grapefruit but not as tart as a grapefruit is. It actually doesn't have much of a flavor to it, but I like it well enough. I do remember I made the mistake of once telling the landlord of my first apartment in Taiwan that I like the pomelo he had given me. It was a mistake because he then showed up at my door the next day with a crate full of them.

Yes they are so commonly grown here that you can find pomelo trees everywhere, even in the city. Meaning that pomelos are extremely cheap since if somebody didn't want to pay they could just walk outside and pick one off a tree.

With so many pomelos being given during this time, people need to find other things to do with them. As you can see in the picture, people like to draw pictures on them. The biggest pomelo hobby is cutting the skin peel off in a certain way that it can be used as a hat. A hat which is then put on your friends or your dog and you take funny pictures of them.

Thankfully my dog has avoided this tomfoolery, but there are probably some pictures floating around of me wearing one as a hat. When in Rome...
