Finally Asking A Question

A lot of my posts are about some strange, unique, out of place thing that I see, and either going home to research it, or just coming up with some ridiculous reason for it. While in truth what I should be doing is asking people about it. Well my dear friends for once I did just that.

In this awful picture is an advertisement for a Herbie Hancock concert here in Taipei. I've talked before about how the strangest of people will come to Taiwan. Either strange as in "why would anybody see them" for example, just one of the backstreet boys. Or strange as in, "how would Taiwanese even know who this person is?" for example, Bobby McFerrin or Olivia Newton-John.

Well after years of pondering, we are finally getting some kind of answer. About a week ago I saw that a friend's skype picture was of herself standing next to the entrance for the Herbie Hancock concert. So I asked the important questions of "you went to the concert?" "did you even know how he is?" "had you ever heard his music before?" "do you actually like him?" "can I have 30 bucks?"

Yes she did go to the concert and she had heard of him before. This is because he had come to Taiwan two years ago for a concert and she went to see that one. Which brought the follow up question of why did she go to that one. Her exact response was "that concert was with LL." At this point my mind exploded. LL Cool J!? she knows him? he came to Taiwan? WHAT!?

But know, it was Lang Lang. If you don't know Lang is a chinese concert pianist. He is popular in Taiwan. So I guess this also cracks the code. If a a foreign musician wants to have a concert in Taiwan, first they should have a concert with a chinese/taiwanese artist, get known here, then come back for a solo concert.

I'm tempted to try this myself. First I'll have to make friends with a taiwanese pop star, then stand on stange with them and play the triangle while they sing. Finally a year later I'll have my own concert. Don't worry it won't just be the triangle, I'll play the spoons as well. Gotta give the people what they want.
Dude, I would totally go if Herbie Hancock came to my town.

@stephomy nothing against Herbie Hancock. in fact for a while when I was a kid, Rockit was my favorite song. Just that there are a long stream of people who have concerts in taiwan where not only does their music fit with the mainstream music appeal here, but most of taiwan has never heard of them.
