The Taiwanese Love Of Lines

About a month back I mentioned the donut situation in taiwan. But since the donut situation in Taiwan is of no importance to anybody reading this, I will quickly recap. Mister Donut is everywhere and used to be extremely popular but now is nothing special. Dunkin Donuts was here for a few years and recently left. Krispy Kreme is opening this month. Now that you are up to speed...

About a week ago I was walking home from the subway when I saw a family in front of me carrying two boxes of Krispy Kreme. I stopped to ask them where they got them from, and they said that on that day 1,000 boxes were being given away for free. Yep for free. And since every Taiwanese person who has ever spoken to me always says "Taiwanese are so friendly" you would assume that the family would have offered me one. But of course they didn't. I think my last post of the year will be about how I think when people tell me "taiwanese are so friendly" they don't mean it, and are rather trying to jedi mind trick me.

When I got home I looked up that the following Sunday (today) there would be more free donuts. Now I must admit that i'm not a big fan of Krispy Kreme as even for me they are too sweet. However the fact that they are different from anything else in taiwan, makes me want to have them. The problem is that Taiwanese love to line up, and that a line just inspires more people to line up. So I was thinking it would be smarter not to go.

My only hope was that the weather would be in the low 60s which is like Antarctica for Taiwanese, or that it would be raining. Unfortunately it was a beautiful day today. But I was still thinking I would at least stop by and take a look. Before I needed to take a look though, a friend found a picture online of the long line. So that was strike one. Strike two was my friend backed out of wanting to wait with me. And the final strike was that in exchange for the free donuts you have to give them a "like" on facebook. Since I have proudly never had facebook, I wouldn't sacrifice my happy facebookless life for any free thing. So no donuts for me.

By now i know that you are thinking that it really didn't matter anyway, that I can just come back when it officially opens and pay for donuts without a line. You are forgetting where I am. That lines are an important part of any new business and that it just makes more people want to go there. So this kind of buzz on a free day, will only make hundreds more line up even when it's officially open and they have to pay. Remember that for the first year of Mister Donut lines were over 2 hours to buy donuts. I'm pretty sure that it will be the same for Krispy Kreme for the next few months of it's business.

But that's fine. I'll save my time, money...not to mention my kidneys and feet.
I'm a professional baker, but I still have a soft spot for donuts. I'm not sure if I would wait in a line that long for them though...also I kind of want to give you a high five for not being on Facebook. I was beginning to think I was the only person out there that saw through their bull ****.
