My get-pushed partner challenged me to make a pan motion shot. As I had already responded to this sort of challenge with vehicles, I decided to try people. Lucky for me, I found a track meet at a nearby high school.
@farmreporter Wendy, thanks for the challenge. I stopped by a high school, hoping to find a sports practice where I could take some motion pan shots. I was lucky and found a track meet.
Oh, wow! You certainly caught the action well! She is in such sharp focus (except for her moving hands and feet) and the motion blur behind is excellent!
Well done and a FAV!
@farmreporter@30pics4jackiesdiamond Thanks for your kind remarks. I've found that the key to getting images like this one is to take about 100 and throw away 99. I'm serious about that.
The essential elements are:
1. A slower shutter speed that you would normally use
2. Set your camera to servo auto focus, or if you know where your moving subject will be, prefocus there.
3. Set your camera to take continuous shots when you hold the shutter button down.
4. Follow your subject in the view finder as it approaches and start firing.
5. Follow through with your panning motion as the subject passes.
You can find several good videos on YouTube that explain the technique.
