I've done several motion panning shots in the past. Today, I decided to do the opposite and keep the background sharp while letting the vehicle blur. This speeding locomotive was only going about 25-30 mph (40-50 kph). The slow shutter speed gave me the effect I wanted.
I like this one, Tim. The subject remains completely inside the picture frame, the subject has kept enough density to remain mostly identifiable, and the high speed motion feeling is outstanding in the image. My only interrogation is that my first feeling when seeing the picture was that the sense of motion is from left to right, while the reality, according to traffic rules, must be the opposite.
