Hughenden, population 1,100, is the largest town on the 650km drive between Charters Towers and Cloncurry and like all country towns, is struggling to remain relevant.
Tourism has become increasingly important and the relatively recent discovery of large dinosaur remains in what is known as the Dinosaur Triangle has given the tourism sector a real focus.
Despite the fact that there are a number of empty shops in the main street, the town looks like a thriving community centre with the kerbs all painted white, coloured pavers on the footpath and artificial grass on the verges. It looks brilliant and so far wins the PoppoLivy “Take a Bow” award.
The little café on the left does a great bacon and egg burger as well.
