Combo Waterhole

Day 23 - Cloncurry to Barcaldine

About half way between Cloncurry and Winton, we saw a turnoff to Combo Waterhole and it being time for a cuppa and thinking there may be some interesting birdlife there, in we went.

As we were making the turn, I said to Rhoda that for some reason, Combo Waterhole sounded vaguely familiar but I couldn't remember why.

Any of you Aussies know what it is famous for?

That night I looked it up and da dahhh!!! It was the waterhole that inspired Banjo Patterson to write Waltzing Matilda. There should be huge signs up in lights. Although if I had written a song about the waterhole after our visit, it would have been all about the flies and not about a stupid wandering sheep. They were horrendous. We even got out the nets we used in Kings Canyon so we could have some peace. Made it a bit difficult drinking our coffee. though.
