Poison Dart Frog 1

These spectacular little frogs are one of the planet's most brightly coloured animals.

They are native to the forests of Central and South America and get their name from the fact that the native tribesmen used the poisonous secretions from the frog's bodies to tip their blow pipe darts with.

They derive their poisons from the toxicity of the food they eat eg ants, and the brighter the colours on the frog, the more poisonous they are.

Poison Dart Frogs range in size from about 2cm to 5cm. These guys were probably about 5cm (the photos have been heavily cropped).

CRIKEY!! What a beauty!! (I couldn't help myself).

Taken at Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo in September
