Vivien and Caldervale by terryliv

Vivien and Caldervale

We gave each of our grandchildren a Tambo Teddy when they were born but were a little tardy with one for Vivien. She finally got it today and its name is Calvervale .
Either we stuffed up and ordered a larger one or they stuffed up and sent us the large one. Either way, Vivien has ended up with a big bear.

The story of Tambo Teddies is an interesting one. Back in 1992 wool prices had crashed, the district was in the grip of a drought and the outback Queensland community of Tambo were challenged to come up with new industry to sustain the economy of this little town. A brain storming session during a workshop developed the idea that Tambo could assist the wool industry, encourage tourists and create employment by hand making unique teddy bears from wool pelts and stuff them with wool.

Popular opinion said it wouldn’t work, but after many laughs, three women – Mary Sutherland, Charm Ryrie and Helen Sargood – decided to bite the bullet. After many frustrating months of designing and planning, the first Tambo Teddies were ready for sale in February 1993.

The impact and enthusiasm of the public was overwhelming and the business grew from there to employ over fifteen part time workers. Tambo Teddies now take pride of place in homes all over the world and have made the little town of Tambo the ‘outback Teddy capital of Australia’.

We drove through the town in 1998 and Rhoda fell in love with them and bought one for herself

Looks like Vivien is a little stuffed too! Thanks for the interesting story on the Tambo Bears. I'm an old bear collector - got my share of Steiffs and had some custom made by Canterbury Bears. May have to check out Tambo.

I bet that bear is unbelievably soft, just like the little cutie next to him. Isn't she a dolly! Neat that you've given each of the grandkids one of these very special bears.
