We were driving beside some water when I saw these ducks, did a double take and then yelled out "Mergansers". Everyone else I n the car thought I had finally lost the plot completely.
I believe the fellow out front is a Hooded Merganser and the others are his lady friends? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Richard Hoeg who no longer posts is to blame for my enthusiasm in seeing a merganser.
Just going back over some of the earlier pics from our US visit
Congratulations! The three on the right half are definitely Hooded Mergansers (one male and two females). I remember Richard Hoeg's great bird photos also. The duck on the far left looks like something else to me. The bill is bigger and head shape is different. A female of some small duck species no doubt.
Without reading Terry's responses, I was staring at the photo and Anne's id wondering what I was missing....too much scotch on a Saturday night was my first thought...then I find out that Terry is playing with my head!
OK, this is too weird. I'd never before heard of nor seen a Merganser, and then in my feed, not too far apart is this and a shot of a Merganser posted by @photocrazy, which he IDs as a Hooded Merganser. How bizarre is that? Here's the link to his shot: http://365project.org/photographycrazy/365/2017-01-08
@mjalkotzy I totally agree with Martin - but I'll have a scotch now too :) @stray_shooter Ha ha, I saw Phtotcrazy's first and now this from Terry. All just too much! But great find Poppo :)
