The plaque at the Deception Bay bridge - but someone has made at least 3 errors in its wording. Can you spot them?
(Talk about setting yourself up for some egg on face.)
Nice shot Terry. The only one i see is the fathom distance should be 6076 ft, and honoured spelling depending on your country of origin, so feel free to enlighten me.
@terryliv Could be! There is something about signs that invites shooting! Have you been to Alabama? You can hardly read the road signs for all of the holes. There's a reason I'm called stray, so obviously that wasn't me.

OK - Here we go.
1. a knot is a unit of measurement of speed - not distance. 1 knot is 1 nautical mile per hour.
2. 1 nautical mile is 6076 feet - not 6082.66 feet
3. To describe the speed of the current, it should have just said it was 5 to 8 knots. Knots per hour is a measurement of acceleration and after a couple of hours, the current would be raging at that rate of acceleration.
and, a bit more obscure
4. "Velocity" is the wrong term to describe the speed of a current. Velocity is made up of two components, speed and direction. So if you are travelling at 60kph and going around a corner your velocity is constantly changing because your direction is constantly changing. Needless to say, the direction of the current is constantly changing and hence so is the velocity. It should have just said the speed was 5 to 8 knots.
Here endeth the lesson :-)
@gilbertwood All taught in high school Maths II Denise. Ernie Gerhke would have turned in his grave if he had seen it. (I'm assuming Ernie is in his grave by now.)
@tonydebont I find it amazing that so many elementary mistakes could be made on something that is going to be viewed for hundreds of years. It really grates on my sense of good order and military discipline. :-)
