Downtown Normanton

Day 15 - Normanton, Gulf Country, NWQ

The main street of Normanton, population 1,468, largest town in the Gulf Country and administrative centre of the Carpentaria shire.

In travelling through the outback and country towns in Oz, one of the things that has always impressed us is how much civic pride there is in these small rural communities and how neat and tidy the towns are.

They are all struggling for survival and tourism, especially grey nomad tourism, is recognised as just about their last chance. Consequently, without much to offer, they have latched on to any local aspect they can and have promoted it to the hilt in an effort to stay alive.

You've got to hand it to them.

Don't bother to comment - just telling a story

Small towns do struggle. Having pride in their towns is a good thing. Great shot of Normanton.

Totally agree, I used to judge these places on the public dunny index, if they were clean and well maintained the place was worth an extended stop. Lovely capture Terry.
