This garden is full of fancy leaf Vrieseas and is on our right as we walk out our back door.
These Vrieseas are grown for their beautiful leaf patterns and strange as it may seem, you do not want them to flower. The flowers tend to be big tall gangly stalks with a very insignificant flowers emanating from the top.
One of the exceptions to this rule is Vriesea Splendide (or Splenden) which produces a vibrant red flower bract and then small yellow flowers. Two Splendide flower bracts can be seen at the top of the shot.
As with all Broms, once the plant has flowered, it starts to die but hopefully not before it produces a number of pups.
