Algebuckina Bridge on Neales River by terryliv

Algebuckina Bridge on Neales River

The Algebruckina rail bridge was constructed in the early 1890s and was opened in 1892. It spans the Neales River and was part of the old Ghan railway.

The bridge is over 580 mtrs long and is the longest bridge in South Australia. During the 1974 floods, water lapped the bridge decking!!!!

The bridge carried its last train in 1981 when a new bridge was opened 100kms west for the new Ghan railway. The bridge is now heritage listed.

Hard to imagine the flood waters lapping the deck. It is a pretty impressive looking bridge :)

They were built to last back then! Hard to imagine a flood of that depth.

Very impressive bridge. That must have been an awful lot of water for it to reach the deck of the bridge.
