Remembrance Day 2014 by terryliv

Remembrance Day 2014

After I had posted my pics and gone to bed last night, it suddenly occurred to me that I didn't have to use Charles Stanley Smith again for Remembrance Day. It is also about those who returned home.
So here is a second collage of four great uncles who fought in WW1
Pte Charles Stanley Smith: 9th Batallion, killed fighting in France;
Pte Frederick Urban Smith: 2nd Light Horse Reg't, fought in Palestine;
Pte Angus Livingstone: 4th Motor Tpt Coy, saw action in France;
Gnr David Charles Livingstone: Anzac Ammunition Reg't, fought in France.
The two Smith boys were my paternal grandmother's brothers; the two Livingstone boys were my paternal grandfather's brothers.
From what I can tell from the letters from the Livingstone boys home, not all the action they saw was on the battlefield. :-)
There is no one from my mother's side since, and this goes to show the futility of it all, my mother's father came from Germany - or Prussia to be more precise. And in another twist, the mother of the two Smith boys was also German - from Nassau in the heart of the Rhineland.
It does us good to see and remember who fought for us all!

@gigiflower Yeah sam. As I say in my profile, both Rhoda and I are avid genealogists and have traced our families back just about as far as we can go. It was an addiction that only commenced in about 2007 but it rapidly consumed our lives and took us all over England, Ireland and Scotland as well as parts of Poland and Germany. It was a fabulous journey of discovery.

@ribbet9 @janiskay @gigiflower @tonydebont I should have added that there were 7 Smith boys in all and boy they were a handsome pack of roosters. Must be where I got my looks from - but certainly not my ability to (not) grow a moustache.

Wonderful photos! You are so lucky to have photos of them all. Tracing family history is amazing. My sister and I are off for a few days to follow up on some info about my dad's family next week

Wow you have so much information on your families. How lovely to have their letters. Seems so sad that in my family nothing was treasured and kept for us to find out about what happened in their lives. Following
