Wyndham (pop 700) is the most northern town in Western Australia and sits on the eastern side of Cambridge Gulf, an inlet of Joseph Bonaparte Gulf in the Timor Sea.
The five rivers that flow into Cambridge Gulf, the KIng, the Durack, the Pentecost, the Ord and the Forrest can be seen from this lookout. This is the view up Cambridge Gulf to the north and the Timor Sea. The Ord River can just be seen on the right amongst the leaves of the tree.
Wyndham once supported a very large meatworks which was set up to export meat to the UK and US. It was closed down in 1986.
Wyndham is the hottest (average) place in Australia. November is the hottest month with an average maximum temperature of 39.5°C (103.1°F), the coolest month is June with an average maximum of 31.0°C (87.8°F). The annual average maximum temperature is 35.6°C (96.1°F). In 1946, Wyndham recorded 333cconsecutive days of temperatures over 32°C (90°F). Can you imagine working in a meatworks in temperatures like that?
