After a very early start from Halls Creek and just 19ks down the road, we reached the turnoff to Alice Springs.
There are a number of tours of the Kimberley on offer but one of the main reasons we chose this particular tour was that rather than just following the Great Northern Highway from Purnululu back to Broome (booring) it turned south and headed for Alice Springs through the Tanami Desert.
For the next 1080kms, there are no towns, no villages, one service station, a couple of aboriginal settlements (for which you need a permit to enter) some cattle stations and a couple of gold mines - and that is it.
Until recently, it was just a track through the desert but since the gold mines were established, it is now a formed road - there are even a couple of sealed sections although these account for only about 10ks in total. The rest is corrugated dirt road.
The sign bottom right is on the highway.
great shots - we just bought a landcruiser and a caravan and will be hitting the road to become part time grey nomads so hoping to see all these wonderful places you have been to at some stage. Will probably just do QLD first though.
