An image taken for the history of photography course I'm ta-king. Cartes de Visite - calling cards - became popular in the mid-1850s as the photographic process became easier, faster, and less expensive. My willing model tried for that effect but I'm afraid his smile came twinkling through, rather than the more serious look usually seen.
