Departing

I discovered this morning that Virginia State Parks has First Day Hikes and as a part of those, holds a First Day Hikes photo contest. So I grabbed my camera and, with the Missus in tow, headed out to Pocahontas State Park to see what a dreary winter's day could provide as photo fodder (or foto phodder).

Beaver Lake, normally very photogenic, was gray and flat, but Swift Creek was positively overrun by water fowl. There were 50-75 Double-crested Cormorants, a dozen Canada Geese, a few mallards, and a single Great Blue Heron.

Most of the cormorants were just perching on the banks of the creek or milling about in the water but this one decided to fly off elsewhere and gave me a pretty good look at his departure.
Great capture

So cool to see this cormorants starting his engine. Enormous water splash to get lifted up. Nice timing
