The Missus and I visited Maymont, a 100 acre historical estate built by a late 19th century railroad magnate. The mansion and gardens are preserved and open to visitors. The ground also house a nature center, where injured or orphaned animals that cannot be re-wilded have a forever home.
Maymont's Japanese garden has an enormous koi pond which originates in this man-made waterfall*.
*I guess I should clarify that the rock escarpment is the natural geology of the Richmond area, which is situated where the Atlantic coastal plains meet the Appalachian Piedmont. The water is pumped over the edge to get to the pond, an original feature of the estate.
