St. Mary's by ukandie1

St. Mary's

Took a walk into the town close to where my mum lives today and found this little church. Apparently Norfolk has over 650 medieval churches - the highest concentration in the world. Of these, 125 have round towers, and this is one of them. According to the Domesday Book a church has stood in Watton prior to 1086, but this church was built between 1100 and 1135.

My commenting will be sporadic until I return to Chicago next week, thanks so much for all of your wonderful comments on the shots I posted yesterday!

I always find these little village churches very homely, intimate even, I guess because their construction is plain and without the ostentation that might be found in a city church. The most characteristic thing for me is the knapped flint construction - it is said that any building made from knapped flint will easily outlive the civilisation that built it. And who knew that so many 365ers live in Watton ;-))

@jakey @gillian1912 What a small world it is! My mum lives in Saham Toney so Watton is just a short walk away.

I don't think I've ever seen a church with a round tower, how interesting. What a beautiful scene.
