Both of my kids are home this weekend, so as a family we went to Chicago Animal Care and Control to adopt a dog, they are very full at the moment. There are many shelters and rescue centers in the area, but we wanted to go where the need for adoption is great (or rather greater than other places, if there is such a thing) and it was not something we did on a whim, we finally knew the time was right. I am not sure if we picked him or he picked us, he was the only dog we had out of its pen, it just felt right! I don't think we could have found a dog with a sweeter nature than him.
He came into the shelter a little more than a month ago as a stray, but I can't help feeling that someone loved him before us! He is house trained, knows basic commands, sit, stay, leave, and in the 24 hours I have been working with him he responds to visual cues as well as spoken. He has some vices, he pulls somewhat on the leash, and I have yet to test him properly in a social situation, hard to say if he was agitated by the dogs we met or just eager to meet them. Whilst I believe that he is fit and healthy I don't want him mixing with other dogs until he gets the all clear from our vet, he was definitely wound up by seeing the other dogs!
Going to CACC was one of the most stressful things I have done, the noise as you enter the adoption rooms is deafening, and the eagerness of the dogs for attention is overwhelming! I still see one particular dog in my mind who said please pick me as much as Finn did, I hope he finds a home soon!
@jetr Thanks Joan, his crate info said he is three, but I will not be surprised when we take him to the vet in a few days time if they say he is older. To be honest I don't care, he is family now :)
What a poser! His character shines out from his face. He chose you well ! I wish you much joy. You did a great thing in adopting him. You do get a sense of their previous life. Our rescue dog must have been treated terribly, she will have trust isdues to her dying day but I am so glad we have her. She is family.
@taffy loving it...photography was a little slow last week, not because Finn is a ton of work, but because he is too cute and a tremendous amount of fun. People who have rescued a dog from a shelter often talk about the the bond they have with that dog. I thought I knew what they meant, but I totally get it now. Just about to post a Finn update!
