Calling it a day

August 27th, 2016
I'm calling it a day on my 366 project & I just wanted to say thanks to the people here who have supported & encouraged me. Unfortunately I've had to make the decision to stop as I formatted a memory which contained photos I hadn't uploaded & despite trying a number of recovery software options I can't get the images back.

And so it ends for this year

David, this is a decision that will be regretted by lots of folk on here... and not least by me. I'm not sure that I understand your reasoning: losing stored images is a bummer but I've always understood that, in the spirit of the site and like the majority of participants, you shoot and post each day.

I do, of course, respect your decision and I would like to thank you for your support this last 8 months... and now there are just two Ocoloyers left - maybe it's me who's out of step?

Be happy David...

although I don't follow you I am sorry to see you leave because of discouragement. I hope you decide to try again.
August 28th, 2016
Sorry to hear. Hope you return when you can.
August 28th, 2016
I'm sorry to hear that David! Best of luck to you!

@vignouse Thanks Richard, I was shooting each day, I didn't always get to upload from camera to PC & post everyday. This last week was a hectic week as my daughter was preparing to compete in the Dressage National Championships so I had the images still on the camera. The first morning of the show I was rushing, completely forgot about the images I hadn't uploaded, formatted the card and then went and shot 1500+ images. So while I had the images I don't anymore and so they project is incomplete.

@grammyn Thanks, not leaving because of any discouragement, just through my own failure.

@lisainstpete Thanks, I'm sure I'll do another 365 at some point.

@dianen Thanks Diane.

I intend continuing to pop in and visit here so I can follow projects.

@davejf Ah, now it's clear to me... you're not the first to have done this and you won't be the last! It would have been much worse had it been the pictures of your daughter that got deleted.

You don't have to leave us David, Leave a hole and extend the project end-date to compensate or fill it up later. People on here will care more about losing you as a regular 365er than they will about some minor 'infraction' of the 'rules'... very few people manage to complete a 365 without some minor hiccup anyway.

Won't you think again?
August 28th, 2016
Dave, another thing to consider is that you can change the date the images post to on the 365 calendar.

Many of us are unable to shoot every day, but we post an image for every day.

Two things to always know about this project...one is that it is your project and two there are no 365 police.

You're very hard on yourself! Like others I do hope you'll reconsider. I've really enjoyed your shots. You have a distinctive style.
August 28th, 2016
@davejf not a failure but a mistake and I find that's the best way for me to learn. I'm so sorry about the pictures that you lost but I agree with the others that the pictures of your daughter are probably more important. Try not to be so hard on yourself.
August 28th, 2016
I'd be tempted to do something different with those days rather than fill them in the regular way... maybe a collage of your favourites up until now? Make it an opportunity - not a failure. I'd be kicking myself too if I had been as diligent as you had been. But it seems you will be leaving a lot of friends here
August 28th, 2016
Thanks all, I really don't feel I'm being hard on myself. I set myself rules, I broke the rules once when I was ill and failed to take a photo, breaking them again would be unacceptable for me. I might start a new 365 but will wait at least a month.

I do intend continuing to visit this site, to keep on on the progress of projects. I just won't be posting images.

August 28th, 2016
Ah Dave, rules were made to be broken... colour outside the lines sometimes ;)
It'd be a shame to see you go.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate formatting David. Did you by chance try EaseUS? It works on SD cards. I downloaded a free trial and it worked on my SD card which I formatted after uploading the photos. The drawback though, with the trial you can see your lost data (photo files), but you have to purchase it to recover them. That costs $69.95 USD. Only you can decide if it is worth the price.

David, I dont' know you but seems a shame to leave because of your reasoning. I've also lost photos, some I posted here years ago and now no longer have.

As a photographer it is sometimes part and parcel of what we go through. Leaving here has never been an option though. Learn from the error, reach out to the group for support and get back on that wagon and keep taking gorgeous images.

I don't post every day and my friend barely here from me on here due to life commitments but I always make the effort to come and post something. Pick up that camera, don't let something that has happened to most of us make you not follow your passion

@m2016 Thanks Mel, I'm a stickler for rules, my heart just wouldn't be in the project if I continued.

@skipt07 Thanks Skip, I used a number of recovery utility, one of the best (in my opinion) is PhotoRec which is free. It recovered over 1500 images from the card but alas the two I wanted were not part of the 1500.

@silverhorn Rose, for me, continuing the project is not an option. I couldn't leave blanks or filling the blanks as that would be outside of my own rules, the key "rule" for me was having a photo everyday.

I certainly won't be putting down my camera, I took over 2000 images at the weekend at the Dressage Ireland National Championships and will have plenty more equine photography by year end.

While the project has ended early & abruptly, I'm going to start my review process in the coming days. I've done this after my two previous projects, I go through the images, exploring what I have learned and where I've pushed myself. I can then look at areas, themes/styles, I wish to explore further outside of the project. Already, I know that I'm really rather pleased with some of my low key "Kitchen in the Dark" series it's something I intend to continue working on.

Again, many thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement.

@davejf - That's good to hear that you were able to recover so many! Sounds like you have the same kind of luck as me! Not being able to to recover the ones that meant the most! Thanks for the recommendation of PhotoRec. I will look into it. I just Googled, "recovering photos from an SD card" and the top hit was EaseUS. I downloaded it, installed it and ran it using my card I had just reformatted. I was surprised that there were 337 photos on the card. I've never had that many on the card at one time. I thought photo cards saved like other media that when you marked something for deletion the camera would save on top of them. That must not be the case.

@skipt07 Here's the wiki page for PhotoRec, it's free, which is always a bonus.

Just popped in to thank everyone for their support. While I have not changed my mind about continuing my project, I do enjoy participating here and so I have decided that I will from time to time post some images. I'm sure there'll be lots of blank days on the calendar - that may change if I decide to start a new 365 in 2017.

@davejf I understand and respect your decision David... I'm sure that your occasional posts will be something to look forward to!

@davejf ... Please remember, as others have said, that this is YOUR project and if you choose to modify the "rules" to suit changing circumstances it is perfectly OK to do so unless there is clear intention to deceive in any way.
.
Age and ill health have made it impossible for me in the last year or more to adhere to the "take and post on the same day" rule and I have made no secret of the fact that I have reverted to my life long habit of publishing something every day and only tagging it "today" or "yesterday" if it was absolutely essential for readers to be assured that the event depicted happened on that day; otherwise it was perfectly acceptable to hold it for a few days or more until conditions were more suitable .... and if that was OK for a respected Fleet Street daily newspaper I am sure it's good enough for a retirement hobby.

Rules are admirable as a form of self discipline, but deserve to be broken if they threaten completion of a project.
