Boy I must say I threw out a really really really tough challenge and you people did not disappoint... I was kind of thinking that I wouldn't have any one to pick from come the judging time as I thought it would scare you all off... Well wasn't I completely wrong...
I must say the level of entries were great and if I didn't know any better I would of thought that all you guys have know this was coming and have been practicing for weeks, not days!!!!!
Great work all of you and I am very proud of not only the effort that you have shown but the progress in such a short amount of time on such a tricky subject. :)
Give yourself a good pat on the back and I know you will take the lessons you have learned with you into a new world of flash photography... :)
I know using flash has changed the way I look at photos and I hope I have passed this on to you, even if it is just a small taste. :)
Now onto the official business.
I selected the follow photos against the following criteria:
The show the use of FEC in the photo and in particular how they changed the subject exposure to match the background and/or so the subject has interest and is not just a dark shadow.
I also selected the photos against a criteria of how far the person has come and along with how difficult the photo is to take - i.e. showing a grasp of the concept.
This is not about a good looking photo, it is about understanding and demonstrating the use of FEC.
You have Thursday to vote (until 6am Zulu time http://www.zulutime.net/ ). And I'll post the winner on Friday.
Special thanks to the people who gave feedback during the competition - if you're an experienced photographer and willing to give tips and tricks and constructive feedback (in a nice) way please do - either here or on the original competition page where there are more examples
2. Thought long & hard about this challange. Understand principal, have read camera manual, fiddled with camera - can get it to show me flash mode on menu & flash pops up but can't get it to actually work when the camera does not think it is required. Any suggestions?
@nikond40x It appears that your camera is similar to mine since they are both Nikon (I looked at your manual online). I think you need to put it on "S" mode to shoot in rather than "auto" or "M" but Brendan didn't recommend M for this challenge. Then I turn on the flash so it pops up and then set the FEC + or - I am just learning my camera which is brand new I've always had a point n shoot until recently. Perhaps someone could say if this is correct.
I totally missed the challenge ,but have gone back and read it all. I did find the FEC settings on my camera and have printed out all your comments so I can work on this.
3 I like the skin tones of the children. Well done. Look forward to the next challenge, hopes it is an easier one....and can we have a week please.......for the next challenge....look forward to it, Thanks Brendan for a great challenge.
I think this whole time zone, different central times is kind of a bummer and some what confusing, so I suggest we use Zulu time as our gauge for future comps
Well done @myhrhelper with an excellent example of how FEC can be used.
i would just like to thank everyone that played along and I hope that I was able to bring a different light to how you can use your flash and more importantly give you the confidence to use your flash in just about any situation.
Good luck and if you need someone to host again i am more than happy to help.
Wow, thank you everyone who voted for me and the other photo's as well. This is the first challenge I ever won. What is most important to me is that we are learning!!! I use the "auto" setting much less. I asked someone to host the next challenge and hope he accepts since I know we are all excited to learn something new.
Thank you so much @agima Brendan for teaching us about FEC! I will be using this setting when it seems appropriate.
@myhrhelper And blimey look at those splits! @agima This is a great challenge - I haven't had time to get to grips with it this week but I'll be reading through your instructions at the weekend - with the bright sun/strong shadows we've had this last couple of days I've been wishing I could do this - I just need to work out how to force flash!
I am looking for someone to host the next challenge.
I'm hoping to have one of the basic settings covered since many of us are new at using DSLR's. I've asked Jaap Meijer to do it but he hasn't responded yet and I don't want to lose time since the challenge should start soon (within the next 10 - 12 hours). Are any of you open to hosting the next Camera Settings Challenge?
No. 5. Northy
@agima
Do we vote by number or name?
@agima Sorry, when I posted it was names not numbers. :P
I vote for #2
voting for 4... altho' it's a really tough choice
a tough choice but 2 for me!
See here for current Zulu time:
