We went through Newmarket on the way to a dog walk and stopped so I could take some pics of the horses. Nigel picked this shot because it sums up the special atmosphere of the town. This is a work-a-day scene on The Gallops where the racehorses are excercised. They walk down towards the town, cross over the road and gallop back up along the railings on the other side. I like this because it gives an idea of the number of horses around (in fact lots more than this), the companionship of the stable lads and girls and the windy road!
I'm going to post a trotting pic as well - they gallop away from the road and my zoom wasn't up to getting a good shot unfortunately.
On the way home from our 6 mile flat walk NIgel's dad called up from the top of Snowdon - he's 74 - I felt a bit daft with my knee support on!!
Good for Nigel's Dad !! I was surprised to see the horses so near the town itself ... it must be a very great part of Newmarket itself then ! I love the way the colour of those two red jackets stand out !
@happypat Just past the yellow 30mph signs is a junction and you're literally in the town centre. Driving through the town you often have to stop for horses 'walking sideways' (well quite often they are doing that sideways thing - a lot of highly strung horses!) on their way back to the different stables. It's a funny place - lots of massive houses and posh cars and then a bit rough as well on a Saturday night.
@halkia Strictly speaking it's on the edge but if you view large you can see the town clock which is on the main shopping street - really very close indeed.
@araminta Yes it's odd - you can walk your dog on there after 1pm when the horses are done. Lots of people park up where we were with binoculars to check out the form.
