The Gog Magog Hills are chalk downlands with an abundance of Knapweed, Scabious and other tasty flowers. At this time of year the paths are heaving with butterflies (and flies too unfortunately) but I've never seen a Marbled White before. It taught me a good lesson - when you see it, shoot it. The first one I saw I tried manual focus - big mistake. I walked an extra mile in rising humidity at the end of our walk to find this one - which is unfortunately behind the chicken wire but I did learn to just take the darned photo - when I reached over the fence it flew off. I have a couple of other types of butterfly but I'm holding them in reserve as I'm busy being a school governor all day tomorrow..
You can hardly see the chicken wire & I wouldn't have noticed it ! You have to be so quick with these opportunities but this is a fabulous shot, I have never seen a Marbled White before & it is so beautiful, thanks for showing us ! Busy day tomorrow then but good work !!
@happypat I don't think I've ever seen one before either - they are quite big (over 2 inches across) and very distinctive. They seem to be found mostly in Yorkshire and the South of England from the Peak District down but not the East - we are right on the edge of their habitat.
What a find! Never seen one of these before - nice capture - know what you mean about all the fiddling - there's a time and a place! Though good on you with trying the manual focus - I'm usually on manual for shutter speed and f stop but keep the thing on autofocus.
do you know what - until i read the comments I hadn't even clocked the chicken wire!! great shot - love the framing too! I'm not sure I've seen one of these before either. I never use manual focus on things that can move faster than me ie only use on brick walls LOL!!
Brilliant shot! I went to an indoor Butterfly World today and didn't really manage any decent shots so I am impressed with this! I also love the way you've presented this.
Lovely - we don't have those here in the States, glad you shared so I could see one. And I didn't see the chicken wire until I had read your post. But then again, there is so much chicken wire in our gardens I think I am immune.
I will be pleased if mine turn out as good as this :)
