When I'm out on my own with only a medium-sized dog for protection I don't generally hope that when I go down a subway it will be full of threat and nastiness, but as my photography homework is 'urban landscape' and he wants 'bleak' I was getting desperate for a suitable target today. I wouldn't go down under Newmarket Road roundabout in the dark but in the daytime it's pretty busy with pedestrians and cyclists. It's quite disappointing on the 'grit' front too as all the walls are covered in rather jolly (and sometimes bizarre - note Newton holding a computer) mosaics. Sorry for the lack of Newton's head - I wasn't really taking the mosaic... Adam has promised he'll find me some serious graffiti - watch this space.
While the overall feeling might not be bleak, I must agree with Lisa, the contrast between vibrant color and stark staircase "peeking" from behind are a visual treat!
You do have rather 'posh' and 'upmarket' graffiti in Cambridge.
This might work in B/W and give it a bit more of an urban look...i was going to say a more urbaness look, but urbaness comes up with a little squiggly line when I type it in my firefox browser , so it is obviously not a real word.....urbaness ...it should be a word though !!!
lovely graffiti - although not that bleak. Have you checked out a skateboard park, preferably in the rain? Or if you felt strong, the rough areas of Harlow
This is up market cheerful graffiti !! I agree the contrast of stairs & colour is very marked & that is what makes it interesting ! I hate subways even in the daylight, is Monty any good at protection ?
@happypat He was so busy sniffing the floor that he didn't notice an Alsation approach him & when he did he yelped & nearly had a heart attack... I like to think he'd try and protect me though!!!
Been too busy for the last few days to browse 365. Thanks for you comments. The art work has certainly brightened what would have been a very bleak area without it. Lovely contrasts.
A very cheerful urban landscape ;). I like the composition a lot. The only good graffiti I can recommend is the pieces on Newmarket Road I haven taken pictures of before. But most of them are quite cheerful as well. I guess Cambridge is just not nasty enough but thank God for that :).
This is very cool! I'm thinking you might need to migrate out of Cambridge to find urban bleak...perhaps a field trip to the Brixton section of London. Take Monty and a few of his biggest, fiercest friends with you.
