Thanks for your comments on yesterday's photo - I enjoyed posting it -I felt as if I'd 'come home', taking things I love about Cambridge. I'm finding this urban grit homework rather taxing. Don't be thinking that Cambridge doesn't have grotty stuff - it does but it's just boring and bland rather than photogenically ugly. So in desperation I went out to Bar Hill skatepark today, couldn't find it, took Monty on a rather abbreviated walk because I had to be back in town later and then on my way back to the A14 I spotted the tell tale graffiti (they have legal walls there). I climbed up over some scrubby land to take some shots and it was very quiet so I got a bit of a shock when I saw this grumpy lad. I said hello, took a couple of pics of the ramps and my car alarm started going off. As I marched rather harrassed back to the car I took this hip shot on the move. Although he's looking at me I don't think he realised I was taking the shot. I thought about disguising him a bit more but he wasn't that young and if he was bunking off I'm sure the school had already noticed.
Oh, wow. I had seen you had this assignment. You are really going all out to get this homework done well! This is TERRIFIC! And you are brave! What processing is that? I love it!
@espyetta Thanks very much - I don't know if I'm supposed to have people in my urban landscape homework but hey!! I used Picnik and did a focal B & W in reverse so that the boy was B & W and then I used Cinemascope and tweaked the saturation and exposure as it was a bit too dark. Glad you like it - I was very pleased to find that he was looking straight at me - no doubt thinking something not very polite!!
@judithg That is what makes the pic...his stare....it is like he is either angry or maybe too apathetic to even look away or yell at you. Thanks for the piknik info too! I think the edits are great!
@paulaag@snowy He was annoyed but I don't think with me (not that having taken this shot I waited to find out) - he was only a young lad and I've got one of those!! I think he thought I was a mad old woman.
Wow, awesome gritty urban shot! This is so different from what you usually do. And even though I love your "usual" (not saying you always do the same, because you don't) work, I really love this as well. Wonderful candid! Hope your car is ok?
Judith, shot from the hip, but expertly framed, a nice shot of urban Cambridge,
You've slipped a 'partial' song title into the title of your picture again ! Was this intentional or pure accident :) ? It could be a 'wonderwall' with all the colourful graffiti
He looks a bit like a young scowling Elvis ! You really went out of your way to get this shot so well done & top marks !! What a long course you are on-must be longer than 6 weeks now !
total fav for your effort the shot and the hip...wow wow wow...so impressed...not sure he is of school age..he looks a bit older to me but i am not sure. i am beyond impressed....
@sparkle I'm waiting to see if he suggests letterboxing today's pic as it probably would work as an alternative - I've given him a song title name as consolation!!
@judithg LOL - I got a B&W and letterbox the other night which i saw coming - I scored 10 points for predicting it correctly!! NOPE today's picture doesn't deserve a letterbox!
and a FINE hip shot this is!! Love reading your depiction as well. You are really putting yourself through the ringer, pushing yourself and growing in your art form... I admire what you are doing and you make me want to try a little harder to focus on becoming better.
wildly impressive shot AND from the hip??!!! that's amazing. Most of my hip shots turn out to be either all sky or all sidewalk -haha! Anyway, congrats on a terrific shot and on making the PP!
@judithg@sparkle Can I butt in and be ignorant? What is a letterbox? lol I understand the title of the picture so I guess I can claw back some street cred points for that? I love this photo Judith, I don't think he looks angry, well only that you found his hiding place. And I agree with @happypat he has def the look of a young Elvis.
@Cherrill It's when it's cropped to be the shape of a letterbox - ie wide and short. Very effective for some shots but I often can't bring myself to crop out the context of the shot.
