The Long Reach by judithg

The Long Reach

Well it was a dreary old day with dreary old photos so it seemed time to have a bit of processing fun. I was going to buy Aperture to go on my new Mac but the reviews are a bit mixed and it's quite expensive so I'm going to play with it in the Apple Store first. Instead I bought 'Snapseed' and had a play with the effects. It's a shame you can't fade out like you can with Picnik (and yet again it proves just how good Picnik is) but I quite liked the faded antique effects - it will be interesting to see how they look when the starting photo is nice and bright! These rowers are coming towards me along a stretch of the river called The Long Reach - the church in Fen Ditton is seen in the distance. I've had a go at a few other effects in my alternative pic.

I've bought Parallels for my iMac so that I can still use Windows on it, it enables me to still use the Photoshop I had on my PC.

I didn't realise I could download snapseed onto my Mac - I love that app!

This is a really cool photo, lovely composition.

The rowers are really crisp against the background. Sounds like you are going to be busy with your new toy!

Love the crispness of the rowers against the fogginess of the background. Nice shot.

Great shot of the rowers , It looks really chilly but I expect the rowing keeps them warm. Have you used the "be funky " editing I find it very good .

well I never heard of snapseed but I like the vintage feel of this.

I don't know any thing about all these apps but would like to !!! I must admit I am getting to quite enjoy messing about with my photos. Lovely angle of this photo with the rowers & church in the distance !

Love the action of the rowers in the foreground, the structure of old architecture in the softened background.

Excellent shot - lovely rural England.

A very peaceful scene. It's amazing what we can do with apps these days...

It looks great and it does look like a dreary day, there.

Love the PoV, great shot.
I use Photoshop elements on my Mac.
January 18th, 2012
@johnnyfrs I'm thinking I may go that route.

really like the bright clear rowers in the foreground and the soft misty subtle background

nice shot Judith - interested to see what you do with all your processing options now! I'm starting on my Piknik journey (as an alternative to PSE!) it's all a matter of having the time to play properly!!

Beautiful composition! So many editing apps and programs...so little time!
January 19th, 2012
Beautiful shot, Judith - looks as though there's a mist rising up from the grass!
January 19th, 2012
Judith, have you looked into Pixelmator? It's made for Apple and is very similar to Photoshop and only costs $30. :-) Cool photo---looks chilly to be rowing. :-)

@5unflow3r Thanks for the tip - I'm going to give that a try!

Rather them than me, looks mighty cold, great capture!
January 19th, 2012
You captured the very dreary day very well! Love the background mist and that red-ish roof.

Really like the picture, the focus on the rowers is great. Didn't realise you could snapseed for the mac either, I've just got it as as a toy on my ipad. going to look into that. If you buy aperture, buy it from the app store it's much cheaper. I've used it from day one, and it can be a bit glitchy, but I love it. It has a great raw converter, and the best colour temp fixer I have ever used, but that's just me!

This is exactly what I think of when someone says Cambridge. Fab!
January 19th, 2012
I do love rowing and I like what you've done with the shot, Judith.

I had Aperture on my iMac but uninstalled it again because it is just not good and in my opinion not worth the money (if you want to buy it than get it from the App Store - it's cheaper). I use Lightroom and I love it :)
This is a great shot! So chliché Cambridge ;)

Get back to me if you want any more info on aperture.

@sabrinaromahn I agree. I'm not crazy about Aperture either. It was okay in the beginning but can't compare to Lightroom or Photoshop. Aperture isn't worth the money,
