Not the best photo I've taken today but the most significant for a diary entry. You may be able to see some deer to the left and in front of the second hedge. Two black spots behind them are two hares. In the dip in front of the hedges where (you can't see!) are another hare and a tricolour spaniel.... A few seconds after this shot the deer moved off to the left - straight into the view of said spaniel who then sprinted after them right up to the horizon and beyond. We waited, whistled and shouted for a good few minutes until a minute black speck reappeared on the horizon and took quite some time running (not quite at full pelt) back towards us. Phew!! He was only off-lead for about 15 min of the walk and 12 of those were chasing those deer - a bit too far away to film for another internet sensation!
What a funny story. bet Monty's momma got a scare. Hopefully no damage to his tender paws. Cayenne could teach him a thing or two re how totally boring deer really are. She only gets excited by squirrels, elk, coyotes and bear. Deer are such frequent visitors that she can't be bothered. This is a lovely expanse nicely composed
Well he did let rip , good old Monty !!! I am afraid our dog wouldn't have been much better & she is a farm dog & should know better !! Never mind Judith there was no one there to catch it & Monty will sleep tonight...he will be twitching all night thinking about the excitement !!!! I am amazed how much snow you have , none here just very cold & wet !
@happypat What you need is a trip to a place where it's summer! It was really deep up there - hard work for the legs - and really stunning up on the ridge. My famous last words - 'what we need is a lovely hare to hop past'....!! @jgpittenger Bear? Coyotes?? Aaaarrggghhh!!!
Judith, thank you for the welcome! Your photos are lovely. I've been taking lots of photos for a few years but participating in 365 has made me see so many more opportunities every day!
Oh, but he looked so adorable when he finally did reappear, racing towards us with that pleased-with-himself look! I've just up my picture of the event with a very similar commentary!
nice shot of the snow covered land and horrible pit-sinking-in-stomach story - I used to own a lurcher that looked like a labrador from his 57 variety mix, beautifully innocent looking labrador, until he saw deer moving, or steers, or horses across Wimbledon Common, or ... that feeling when they take off after something and you're wondering how far they're going to keep going and if they're going to return.
LOL - having greyhounds that is the ultimate nightmare...deer and hare to chase! We have lost s couple of ours to sport like these for HOURS at a time! at least he showed up against the snow!! Great scene and commentry!
@sparkle The only good thing is that there's no chance of him catching anything. It felt like hours!! He's busy re-living the event in his dreams judging by the sleep-running going on...
Lovely shot too, very graphic.
