I think I may have been rude about Kindles on this site at some point. Then Nigel bought me one to take on my trip to Puerto Rico last year and I was converted - but I still love books and newspapers too. I'm in two book clubs and I have been good and have dutifully read the book for tonight's already - it's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel film book (These Foolish Things) by Deborah Moggach - a fun read. The Kindle has one of the books for the other book club on it - 'London Belongs to Me' by Norman Collins. First published in 1945 and starting on Christmas Eve 1938, in style it could have been written this year - I'm really enjoying it so far (10% in according to Kindle!).
The book club sounds great I love reading but I haven't read since I had Eva! I didn't like Kindles until Christmas when my dad bought my mum one and I was pleasantly suprised!
I'm a book lover too--the touch, smell, sight of old books. But damn if Kindle didn't make reading even more enjoyable. I use mine to read about half of my books. I can fit more books on that tiny tablet than on all the shelves in my house (and I have a lot).
I gave Hank one for Christmas (he's Jewish but loves the gifts part of it and the tree, because "we have to have a place for the gifts!") when they first came out and he loves it. Especially for traveling and reading large books.
This is the thing, you buy a Kindle for travel purposes & before you know it you are looking up books, reading reviews, trying samples & reading in bed with the little light in the cover on while your other half is fast asleep not being disturbed. I still like the feel of a proper book & you can't flick back to refresh just the same but I love mine ! Great focus & DOF here Judith.
@juleswoome Ahh you see that's the iPad - you need the digital ink, weight and size of the Kindle preferably with a cover on. I must, on the other hand, download the Kindle app for the iPad because the Kindle doesn't have a back-light for reading in the dark.
I'm with Samantha. I love it that I no longer choose my books by their weight. It used to be that a heavy book read in bed at night would hurt my shoulder. Love your perspective here.
@happypat You've been kind to me Pat and not reminded me of my previous prejudices! I find the not being able to flick through bit the hardest - especially not being able to easily see how far to the next natural break so you can't tell whether to keep going until the end of a chapter not.
I also never thought I would love my Sony Reader, but after my apartment has been so crowded with so many books and I have such a hard time giving them away, I have switched to digital and am soooooooooooo happy that I did! :)
Love the juxtaposition of the book & the Kindle.
I like my Kindle, but in truth I probably read more on the Kindle app on my phone than I do on the device itself.
I loved my Kindle - and then got a kindle Fire --- ooo now I can surf the internet and facebook in bed...AND read when I am done. Will take it to Europe in May so I can check emails with WIFI. Spoiled? Just a bit!
I had a kindle for my birthday in February and I love it. However, I still like my books too and photography books are essential rather than having it on a kindle as it's so easy to keep flicking pages back and forth to check on things. I love reading but don't have time to go to a book club but I do read in bed each morning and evening. Having a light on my cover means that I can read without disturbing hubby if I can't sleep
I love that the kindle shows your progression with % Mine is loaded up with all sorts of goodies but unfortunately all I'm reading on it currently are pdfs of my uni course books xx
Sorry, Judith, I still prefer "real" books. However, I have taken to getting the daily news via the Internet instead of a newspaper, so I guess I'm making some progress!
I'm afraid I am always leafing over to find out what's happening ahead much to the horror of my Book Club! Can't do that on my iPad so haven't read any of the books there ...yet!
my very dyslexic daughter loves her Kindle too, finds it easier to read than dancing text on pages - and moving her was made much lighter by the lack of books
I like the shot, but it is in danger of taking second place to the fun dialogue that it spawned! I have a Kobo, Liz has a Kindle, the idea was that we could cover all offers that way, then someone introduced my to Calibre.com which converts everything to everything; so that was my good idea scotched. Still find it so handy that it's too hard to ignore.
Love this!! I am a huge book reader here! I have a "Kobo" e-reader -- a Kindle cousin and I love it! Nice being able to take your library everywhere you go :)
Really nice composition with the edge of the kindle reaching into the picture and the blurry book in the background. I always wanted to join a bookclub - haven't managed it so far. I was really tempted to buy a kindle when I saw all the free old books you can get on amazon. Some day soon ;).
Love the photo Judith - great dof and with the kindle against a book. Nice idea. Love almost better the discussion. We all love books, the feel, the smell - and yet the reality of the compactness of the Kindle - especially for travel - just can't be denied. I never thought I wanted one but Bob gifted me one for my birthday last December and I've been hooked ever since. I agree about the leafing through and the not knowing where the chapter will end.
judith, a few years ago we all thought a 'tablet' was something you might have had to take after visiting your previous days picture !! Now with androids, ipads, tablets, smart phones we are overloaded with technology. I suppose it is progress...The lady next to me at work yesterday left her iphone at home, she was really stressed about it !!!
I like the fact it has no light - much easier on the eyes :)
I like my Kindle, but in truth I probably read more on the Kindle app on my phone than I do on the device itself.
This is a nice little picture , lovely bokeh
