We dropped Rachel and accoutrements in Birmingham this morning for the start of Uni. Looking at some of the other cars she seems to have packed reasonably frugally. A whole week of parties ahead - I don't want to think too hard about that! By the time Monty got his walk it was later in the afternoon and we spotted a whole load of 'not-so-young' men in lycra outside this boathouse (Corpus Christi???). When they all started yelling and shouting we realised there was a race on and I got my chance at a bit of panning. We don't have many side by side races because the river is narrow so it was fun to see the action down here. The colleges organise these 'dos' for old boys (and not so old girls as they used to be single sex), let them get nostalgic in a boat, serve them dinner and fine wines in the evening and hope they get their cheque books out to fund a new boat at the end of the night. Seems like a plan...the 'Crew of '78' were on the bank - not sure about this lot. I'm pleased with how sharp the rowers are but would like a blurrier background. And bizarrely the river looks sharp too...
Three good things:
1. Rachel has a nice flat and flatmates.
2. Nigel and I are holding it together whilst be absolutely baffled about where the time has gone since we were rolling up at Uni.
3. No defibrillators were required after this race.....
A bit more blur would have been fun, but I like the crispness of the water and the rowers. Congrats on surviving the drop off. I cried harder when my kids went to sleep-away camp for the first time than for college. By college, they were ready to go and I was ready to have them go. The second year was hard to send them back because I loved when they came home after their first year and we actually fun to be with.
@bpaquette Yes - I was thinking that dropping R off at school for the first time was worse - then she was still very young and not really ready. Now she is definitely ready and has been making that clear to us - thanks for the heads up for next year....
Good shot! It's lovely to have a river that so many enjoy! Still think of Pimms and nibbles in a punt when we were on holiday with the girls a few summers back! The girls thought our 'punter' was very handsome!
I approve of frugal packing! Every time they move they seem to have acquired more and more...........me too come to think of it!
Nice shot. Lovely water. How far from you is Rachel's school? What is she going for? Monty must be thinking he'll get some extra attention now...the poor neglected pooch ;)
Love the liquidity of the water it looks so silky & the panning looks good as they can go fast in these boats. Sounds like the collages have their heads screwed on the right way for future funding.....there is nothing so reminiscent as your youth for putting the hand in the pocket & looking generous & appearing to do well in life to former class mates !
You will feel odd without Rachel & wonder what she will be doing, I wonder how soon she will ring home!!!! Do hope she has a great time in Birmingham, my sister went there & they were the happiest days of her life she says.
I have had to use my P&S today as Jack borrowed my camera the other night , put in RAW mode & I can't get it back to normal, will have to ring him tomorrow!
@happypat I do keep checking FB to see if she's posted what she's up to but she isn't daft she's keeping it quiet!! Quite right really - there was something to be said for being uncontactable!! These kids and technology - it's easy to change back but I'll have to check my camera and the cat's collapsed on my knee!
@judithg My nieces son has been a week at Agriculture college & she rang him during the week as he had forgotten his alarm clock, he was furious with her for ringing!
Great pan and love the water. I remember one of the good things as my kids went to college was the deepening of relationship with the kids still at home. Enjoy Adam!
Its a great panning shot, lovely and focused! I love your third good thing!! It must have felt like a funny day dropping Rachael off at uni, sounds like she'll settle in just fine :) Hope your ok :)
Well done on the panning. You've done a good job. You'll get used to Rachel being at uni and it'll fly by. I can't believe Gemma finished a year ago and will be starting her job in a few weeks time! xx
great narrative Judith, it's quite an emotional day when you drop your children off at uni' for the first time....we had it two years running ...2005 and 2006 .....I hope you took pics to remember the day :)
Fun capture of the old boys!
Those moving in days on campus are crazy! Glad you got Rachel tucked in her new place and approve of the roommates. Wishing the Crockett/Greenwood family a most successful freshman year! And keep in mind that Christmas vacation will be here before you know it. :)
