So I picked up Monty today - hurrah!! And he has to stay in his crate for two weeks - not hurrah!! He can come out 4 times a day for 5 mins toileting and that's that. Rather frustrating not being able to sit with him on my lap (actually he can come out and sit with us for brief periods in week 2) and I'm having to be very disciplined but the vets made it very plain that he really does have to stay confined. If his neck destabilises at this point it will be catastrophic and need plates in it so we have to be cruel to be kind. So even I can spot the slipped disc in the bottom pics - it seems to be right at the very top of his neck. The top cross sections are one of his healthy discs on the left and a squished spinal cord on the top right - he's been a brave dog.
Three GT:
1. Back in his own bed.
2. They kept him in over the weekend (now I realise how unstable he's been).
3. A brand new teddy that's keeping him entertained - I think we may need more than one...
It will be so difficult when he whines to be let out! You will have to steel yourself! I wonder if he got this injury from running headlong into a tree while chasing a stick or ball! Our retriever has done that!
I sympathise with Monty as I had an op for a slipped disc in 2001 but unfortunately it didn't get operated in time to prevent permanent nerve damage. Hope he gets better soon
@maggiemae Well he's daft enough! Now we know the symptoms we know it's been coming on for months so there's no specific event but we may have to ban his hoops :0(
@rosiekind nasty - I know people who've waited ages on the NHS and they didn't mess about with Monty, dosed him up with painkillers and then got on - mind you there will be a hefty bill...
Wow...Monty has been a trooper. Bless his heart. Best wishes to Monty (and his family) for a complete and timely recovery! Crate time will be difficult...but so necessary. Be strong! So glad that your buddy is home and in his own bed!!
Welcome home little trooper. He will probably be happy to stay still as I imagine his neck still feels sore. When he starts getting restless it is probably time for him to come out anyway. Remember having to keep, one of our cats in a trunk for 6 weeks when he broke his pelvis! Great images, that is quite a slipped disc!!
That would be so hard, keeping him confined. Saying a prayer that time passes quickly, he adapts to the temporary situation well, and that healing will be complete... I think God cares about all His creatures!
So glad to hear his days of feeling bad will be over soon. I wish you all the strength you need to keep him in the crate. Would be impossible with Little J ;).
@judithg He's a boy, they don't listen... am good ta, and you? Hope all is ok, other than little Monty.. aww. Like the teddy, we always bought our dogs teddy toys, loved them too. Good luck and give him a ear rub from me!
At least he is home
Poor old Monty. Hope he's better soon.
