After a school meeting this morning I nipped in to town to return some clothes purchases that Nigel and I made on Saturday. Neither of us being inclined to do any actual trying on meant that we only had ourselves to blame for them having to go back. The porters' lodge at Sidney Sussex is unusual in that it faces you as you go through the gate, there are 'courts' to the right and left - in most colleges here is an archway that you go through in to a large court and the lodge is usually on one side or other of the archway. It means that you get to see the 'goings on' in college if you peep through the gate. I nearly got knocked over by a student who came round the corner as I was taking this - my fault! 'In my day' if you wanted to communicate where you were to friends you had to leave a note. These days a note is a rarity so it was good to see the chalked message to Danny B at the bottom. They mean St John's College I expect - not very many Johns around these days.
3 good things:
1. Ticked off quite a few things that needed to be done work wise.
2. Got to the geranium that I have been nurturing from seed before the slugs ate all of it. They are very needy plants and must be extra tasty as all the other plants have been ignored. I've got some Eco gel stuff round it now - hope it works.
3. Stepping out in to the rain to find it turn to sunshine as I walked down the garden.
I always remembered when we visited Cambridge how lovely the arched entrances were into the courtyards....beautiful mellow stone & the porters lodge to the side so I can well visualise this. Funny I saw bits of Cambridge on the news today...Jesus Green & the arch do trees...I recognise ed them fro your photos!
I lovely story to this Judith, you can almost feel you know these young men! Hope they all met up OK.
