Red Backed Kingfisher - honestly, he does have a patch of reddish brown on his back

Many Australians will be familiar with one or two members of the kingfisher family, or at least the sound one kingfisher make, that is the laughing Kookaburra. This pretty kingfisher is smaller than the kookaburra and was another of those times that I made a u-turn on the road after seeing him in order to go back and get a photo.

Excellent photo! Such a huge beak for such a small bird; our Kingfishers are soooo much bigger. And the Kookaburra - I know the song about it from my childhood, but I never realized that it was a REAL bird! @filsie65 my secret is my "portable bird hide" ie my car - I take a lot of my shots through the car window, and there are an awful lot of shots that I miss when the birds don't even like that
