This 40m sculpture of King Decebalus of Dacia is the tallest rick sculpture in Europe and was sculpted over a 10 years period from 1994 to 2004, the brainchild of Romanina businessman and historian Constantin Iosif Dragan.
The gorge forms a boundary between Serbia and Romania. The deepest point of the Danube is near here and is 120m deep. Between 1945 and 1989 Romanians fled from communist Romania to Yugoslavia swimming across the river, hiding from the guards in towers on both sides of the river.
I went on a work trip by car from Belgrade to Bucharest in 2001. I saw so many amazing sights on the trip, the only camera I owned was a nifty little Olympus 35mm p&s, no zoom, from memory the only buttons were for the shutter and to open the film door. Over the next two years I moved onto an Nikon APS camera with zoom, then the Canon APS film SLR then a Canon 35mm film SLR and then my first digital a Canon IXUS v3 I think it was 3.8 mp, and I still think it was brilliant. I got my digital SLR a Canon EOS 20D in 2005.
By gaw, is that unusual.........so singular and unique the way it's surrounded by trees. Not at all like our Mt. Rushmore or Stone Mt. Thanks for sharing the history also. Happy weekend, Les x
@chewyteeth I think my travel retrospective is going to continue for quite some time yet, thanks for the encouragement to continue, I'm never sure if posting old shots is received well or not
@lbmcshutter Well it's interesting because they are places we wouldn't normally see, if they were Alicante and Florida then I'd not find it as valuable but you really went beyond places typically seen by tourests.
Well-received. I'm always impressed by gigantic rock sculptures, regardless of photo age. And bite your tongue, @chewyteeth ...I have some nice shots of Florida when I had to go there for 'volunteer work'. Okay, maybe my memory of shot quality is fuzzy....can't even remember if film or digital.
You got the short straw did you doing volunteer work in Florida?
My pals always get Africa and India and places ravaged by earthquakes. Mmmm Florida, don't drink the water whatever you do. @jgoldrup
@chewyteeth ~ Ya, I totally am trolling other comments this evening...just in that kind of mood. Was 'volunteering' for family as a temporary nanny/babysitter....was otherwise unemployed at the time, so had no good reason not to.
i had a little olympus 35mm- loved it. wonder where it is now
You're being the comment police today?
