I loved the Apsaras at Angkor - and during rainy periods I spent a bit more time examining the bas-relief carvings in sheltered areas - so I am actually glad it was rainy, I spent more time looking at things I may have walked past on a sunny dry day.
For those who missed it on my previous apsara shot, apsaras a female supernatural beings, beautiful and superb dancers, I guess their greek mythology equivalent may be Terpsichore - the Muse of dance. Apsaras dance to the music in the palaces of the gods. They are also caretakers of fallen heroes like valkyries of Norse mythology. The word apsara comes from Sanskrit and has been translated as nymph, celestial maiden and celestial nymph.
In the Art Gallery of NSW a few days ago, I was checking out a few of their carvings that someone had hoiked from Angkor in the past. Nice intricate work!
