On this day ..... in 2005 I realised a dream and visited the pyramids

Seeing the pyramids was a thrill for me, this shot taken late in the day as I reluctantly left and headed back to the city to my colleague's house. So this was probably one of my final glimpses of Giza.

It had been a busy day, early in the day visiting tombs and the early pyramids such as stepped pyramid and the bent pyramid of Sneferu at Dhashur and the Red Pyramid which I was actually able to enter - it required a big climb and crawling through ancient tunnels, not for the claustrophobic!
I know a few words in arabic those for "No thank you" - "La Shukran" got overused with all the touts, the self appointed guides (who'd wander up to you, mutter a few unintelligible words and then hold at their hand for money) and various other people seeking baksheesh.

I'm filling in a few of my (many) gaps with my retrospective finding shots taken on the same date but another year - I would have loaded this last week but had such a poor internet connection I was unable to upload.

I have spent Christmas in some fascinating places around the globe, when I was working overseas I took advantage and did some travel over the holiday season, the holidays meant my leave went further and being in the northern hemisphere winter there were not as many tourists around, Cairo was pretty chilly in late December.
*LIKE* :)

Great shot - I couldn't believe how close they were to both the town and the desert... you've somehow captured that in this shot :)

What a stunning shot. A great sky to set off the pyramids, too. Fav.

@filsie65 Thanks Phil, I have been reading some of the questions people are posting in the forum about posting old photos and they refer to it as cheating and the shots as fillers. Now I don't think of my retrospective shots as fillers or as cheating. This is my project and I will do it the way that pleases me, but I did start to wonder if my followers were not so keen on my approach. Your response has relieved me of those thoughts. I will post other shots sooner or later, but in the meantime this link is the first view I had of the pyramids, from across the city. http://365project.org/lbmcshutter/365/2012-01-08

@lbmcshutter Hi Megan... I'm with you 100%. I think the only rule that you should keep is that it's your own shot, or at least a shot that you manufactured. I think your views from around the world are incredible and love seeing them. Your project, your ideas, your shots, what does it matter when you took it! The only time it bugged me was when a lady I was following left week-long gaps and went and filled them all with nearly identical shots of eg a shoe .. to me just filling in 365 gaps isn't the same at all. Your shots are unique and beautiful and I love them.. I know I'm not the only one. I have travelled a little, would love to travel more and shots like yours help me to keep the dream alive :)

We visited there just before those battles 2011. They started a day after when we came back home.
