On this day .....7 years ago, I realised a dream in visiting Petra, Jordan
This is Al Khazneh - known as the treasury, but for many people it is the site where Indiana Jones found the Holy Grail in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".
My day walking around there was magical, in spite of the flu setting in, courtesy of my time in Cairo (the pollution was so heavy when i was there).
I can still remember walking through the 1.2k Siq with soaring walls, I remember my first view of the Treasury, the climb up several hundred ancient stone stairs to "the high place of sacrifice" and just sitting and surveying the landscape. I remember the exhaustion from the walking/climbing and my cold as the day continued and am eternally glad that I decided to not leave then but it was worth a donkey ride was the only way I'd manage to get up the hill (and hundreds of stone stairs) to see Al Deir - The Monastery. I cherish the memory of looking at this wonderful building whilst sitting on a low basic stool, drinking the Diet Coke and Mars Bar the tent cafe opposite the monastery sold. All of that comes to me and more every time I glance at that photo on my wall.
I posted a picture of it last January too, one taken just as I saw it through the Siq, the walls framing the sight. I have several hundred pictures of Petra, but this is one I have framed on my wall and really is what many people imagine when they think of Petra so it is the one I felt was best to post for my 'on this day' shot.
What a wonderful shot - the pinks are beautiful and seeing it cut into the rock like that is fabulous. Love the camels and your description of the day makes it all the more special. That's what photos are for :)
What sight. I really enjoy your trips walking down memory lane. I am just trying to think of some short trip travels I could do this year...this could be possibly one as I would love to see Petra with my own eyes.
Another beautiful picture of a place that is incredible. I've never seen it, but my husband went there and we have some similar pictures. He had to make the trip by horse, but they changed that later on. How did you get there? I would love to see it someday also, it's incredible. You both are lucky to have been there. A Fav.
OMG! LOVE this photo. My long time bestie and I have only just hatched a plan recently to do one route of the Silk Road and Petra in a couple of years....visiting this place is a dream of mine too. Amazing PoV and composition here. Love the camels in front.
And I bet the day (even though you were feeling miserable) is still vivid in your mind.
@buggirl I have been lucky to have visited a few spots on the Silk Road, I want to head back and do more, I would love to see Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, the Gobi etc.
Nothing quite like a photo to transport you back in time to the taking of it. This is so incredible.
