Our neighbors’ tree that fell on their neighbor’s fence (other side from us). The tree is a white pine that fell over from recent wind. These trees were planted when the neighborhood homes were being built in the early- to mid-90’s and the trees have shallow root systems (apparently). They are mature and susceptible to heavy wind, heavy snow and ice. We have two white pines and made the decision to have them taken down and stumps ground out. Kuh-ching $$$$. But better to have them taken down while they’re upright than have this happen to them. If our 75-footers fell, the possible “targets” would be:
» our garage
» my car in the driveway
» the neighbors’ living room.
So out they’re gonna come. On the bright side, there will be no more needle-raking and -disposal.
When I was a teenager (probably), I heard grown-ups talking mournfully about having a tree taken down. I recall thinking, “Get a life; it’s just a tree” or some such thing. Now a homeowner, I get it.

Ouch! I would have a few more taken down if I could afford it. Nearly two grand for one big tree is what it cost today - even with more trees added there's no discount. I should've been a professional tree cutter.
@marlboromaam Our bill was more than $3K … per tree! Should've been a tree cutter for sure! In fairness, they have a lot of overhead: trucks, lifts, chipper, grinder. All those machines need maintenance, and when they finish in our yards, they have to have a place to dump the logs and chips.

@rhoing For large stumps it's over $400 bucks in addition to downing the tree. I could only do two stumps and the guy just left a mess in the yard from them. You're lucky!
