This somewhat resembles a bird in our area called a "Killdeer." They are hard to spot and particularly their eggs. The lay their eggs on the ground and seem to prefer gravelly areas were there eggs blend in more. If a predator approaches the parent on the nest will pretend that it's hurt and moves away from the nest to draw the predator away.
