My father has been carving faces into bark for many years now and has quite a collection. He has also carved his faces into wooden spoons, walking sticks, and tree trunks. It's wonderful to look underneath the wood's surface and see a wizened old face hiding there.
@emrob He puts a current year penny in each carving, and he did this one in 1998. Can't believe this carving is almost 15 years old. I may have to try to get a recent one to see if his style has changed. He does do women's faces on occasion now.
