Islambad challenged me "to pick a photo from early on in your first year and revisit the location and take the same shot- Then show case both photos side by side so you can see the difference the years have brought."
Left is photo #149 in my project. It was taken as a JPEG edited in iPhoto. 100mm macro at f2.8, 1/1000. Right is a snowflake from this week, shot in RAW, edited in Lightroom and Silver Efex. 50mm with stacked extension tubes, f4.5, 1/125.
It's funny how our challenges have crossed a bit. I challenged Islambad to try Av with a more shallow DoF. She didn't much like it, but she did it. Here I can clearly see how my penchant for wide open apertures doesn't always work very well. I love how it lets in more light and softens backgrounds, but too often with my macros the focal field is too shallow. Now with snowflakes I compensate the slower shutter with a ring light.
My macro lens is calling to me ... it wants to try a f4.5 snowflake with a ring light just to see how it compares to the 50mm with extension tubes. It is snowing, but not pretty flakes today. I'm sure the opportunity will arise before spring.
Islambad @islambad ... Here is my first response to your challenge. I don't have many people pictures from my first year ... my granddaughter, mother, and father, and I won't be able to get them this week. I did, though, find a barn cat that's still here ... I'm going to try and get him. He was a kitten my first year ... big change there! Great challenge. I struggle sooooo much with putting together collages (I use Lightroom's print module) and have to relearn it every time I try. Got it done though!
