We have several window wells where the cats sleep at night. Last night there was a commotion in one, and when I checked the cats were bouncing around like they were playing whack a mole. I shooed them out, lifted their bed, and there was a pocket gopher desperately trying to burrow under the rocks. After a few failed attempts and several screams I finally got the bugger into a bucket and dumped it by a windbreak in front of the house. This morning there was a fresh gopher mound just south of the windbreak. Brutus is an avid gopher hunter, and he spent all day laying by the hole, listening, watching, and occasionally pouncing. I spent all day intermittently watching Brutus watch the gopher hole. He did take a break and come in for supper, but then he went right back out until sunset. Gopher had better beware as Brutus has quite the track record when it comes to catching gophers and his persistence is impressive!
He looks like a lean, mean killing machine. Our old lady, despite her advanced years, hardly misses a day to end the life of some poor four-legged creature and often more than one.
Brutus sounds like my Two who is an expert Bat seeker. Being an inside cat these are the only things that have broken in so far. But if she went outside nothing would be safe.
