Eldest flew home today from California. He said smoke blanketed California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. It hid the landscape we drove through, filling the river valleys with a gray haze. Though this was taken a few days ago, tonight's light was the same brilliant red, as was the ball of the sun. Our temperatures were near 100 F later afternoon, though once the sun dipped down into the smoke layer the surface temperatures dropped almost 10 degrees. What a summer ...
