John and I finally used our tickets for the River District Canal Cruise. The website gives the history of Richmond’s canal system which first started in 1789, after George Washington lobbied the General Assembly to proceed with his vision of a canal and turnpike system that would connect the harbors of the east to the trade and market opportunities west, all the way to the Rocky Mountains.
The captain told tales of Richmond's waterways and history from its earliest beginnings when the British explorers sailed up to the Falls of the James River. We saw brick warehouses and iron railroad trestles as we followed the course of the original towpath canal system. The trip back in time is made more remarkable as you see the tall buildings of modern Richmond along the way.
Did you know Richmond had the first electric street car AND the first beer in a can?
I love this collage. One of these days I must come to Richmond and take this Canal Cruise. I would enjoy hearing about the history of the area and seeing the beautiful sights.

I never thought you could see so much in such a short distance. I have been meaning to take this cruise forever but never get around to it..my buddy Fred has on a couple occasions arranged a "social" on board yet I still haven't gone...one of these days.
