Lytro Up Close

My review of the Lytro
I feel like I have taken some good "living pictures" but you really must be judicious in scene selection. Not all compositions lend themselves to this type of camera. I confess I misinterpreted the Lytro promotional information. I thought the camera automatically "fixed" a picture so it was never blurred or out of focus. That is really not the intention. In fact I find I have to be more careful than ever in establishing my shot.
I like the minimalist form and function of this camera.( it is only 4.5 " long and 1.5" wide) but there will have to be some changes made before it is really functional. Outdoors in the sun it is very difficult to see in the viewfinder/screen because of the reflection. The cover of the lens is a magnet that covers the entire lens. It's a great idea, but when you remove the cover, there is no place to put it, so I feel sure I will misplace it very soon.
Transferring pictures to your computer is very slow. I downloaded 22 pictures yesterday, and it took several minutes to get them on the desktop and then at least 5 minutes more to complete the process of creating living pictures.
So in conclusion, right now this camera is a novelty, fun to play with but certainly not your go-to camera. However, I'm sure sometime in the future it will realize its potential.

Ooh very handy review! Interesting to hear the downsides of the camera - of course, the publicity always promotes the positives but doesn't mention the limitations.

I was wondering how that camera would work in application, so I'm glad you posted this review. Sounds neat, but sounds like it's got a way to go yet.
