Crape Myrtle (also occasionally spelled Crepe Myrtle) is a common ornamental plant in the South. According to Wikipedia, flowers are born in summer and autumn in panicles of crinkled flowers with a crepe-like texture. Hence the name. I haven't photographed it before because it is hard to get the detail of the blossoms. Usually they just look like a mass of color, which is beautiful along a walkway but not so interesting in a picture. The one thing I don't like about this plant are the purple berries that fall and stain the sidewalk in August. Just watch where you walk so you don't get them stuck on the soles of your shoes.
I agree with @olivetreeann. These do remind me of azaleas. Didn't know about the berries on the Crepe Myrtle. But this is beautiful and the colors are wonderful. AND you did get a beautiful photo capture ... beautiful textures.
@karenann@olivetreeann The flowers are a little more ruffled than azalea and the shrub looks more like tree. And of course the blooming period is much later but it is used in landscaping in a similar way.
Beautiful shot, Allison. As you know, these are one of my favorite flowering trees to photograph ;-) In our city, they are lined up on the median through town for 4 miles and it is so striking . I would love to get a photo but there's no place to pull off the road. I love crape myrtles!
great color and you captured the ruffles very well. I think that my neighbor across the street has one in the front yard that his grandfather brought back from Florida.
